Rangers' Offseason Timeline

Season of Change

With a disappointing first round loss to the Ottawa Senators, GM Rob Alonzi knew that just making the playoffs wouldn't cut it anymore.

This offseason has been as busy as any for the New York Rangers, with several key new faces that bring hope and optimism to the franchise. Here is a timeline of every transaction the Rangers have made this past offseason as they try to make a name for themselves as true contenders in the East:

June 9th, 2009:

To New York: To Buffalo:
Ottawa 3rd, Year 12 Andy Sutton
GM Comment: "Well we didn't have any space to bring Andy back and we knew if he hit the open market he would probably get too expensive to bring back, so we realized he had little chance of being with us this season so we decided to at least grab a pick for him."

June 21st, 2009 - The SCHL Supplemental Draft

To New York:

Mike Santorelli

Tyler Eckford

Evan Brophey

Teemu Hartikanien

GM Comment: "Once the players we thought could help us out right now came off the board, we decided to pick up some prospects rather than depth players. We had Santorelli ranked very high on our board and we were estatic when we picked him up at 28th."

June 22nd, 2009:

To New York:
To Calgary:

 Tom Kostopoulos

Daniel Larsson

Clarke MacArthur
GM Comment: "Loved what Clarke brought to the table, but he was just a casualty of a team trying to win now. We got some youth back in the deal with Larsson which I think was key for us being able to let MacArthur go. Tom is a cup winner and he brings some grit and leadership to our young forward group."

June 28th, 2009 - SCHL Free Agency:

To New York:
 Radek Martinek
GM Comment: "Radek comes to us reasonably cheap compared to what other free agent defensemen were fetching. He's a pretty good checker and a great defender and with our trouble on defense in the playoffs last season he should help make us tougher to score on."

June 29th, 2009:

To New York:
To Edmonton:
 Andrei Kostitsyn

Riley Holzapfel

NSH 2nd, Yr. 10

GM Comment: "This deal took all of ten minutes to negotiate. GM Vinny set a price and it was up to me whether we would pay it to grab him. We sent two good assets to the Oilers but we feel it was worth it, Andrei is still young and can produce some scoring as well as some checking."

June 30th, 2009:

To New York:
To Columbus:

 Evgeni Nabokov

Stephane Robidas

Shawn Lalonde

Martin Biron

Cam Barker

GM Comment: "This deal hit us out of the blue. We had inquired about Nabokov before so when we had a chance to pick him up we jumped on it. Martin did a good job for us last year but we feel Nabokov is one of the few elite goalies in the league. Obviously losing Cam Barker hurts but Robidas will come in and replace him for now. We believe we have some pretty good defensive prospects to make up for the loss of Barker and Lalonde will add to that."

When asked if this was the team he expects to take to the ice when the Rangers open their season, GM Alonzi didn't give up any information. "I am very confident this team we have right now can win a lot of games, but if there is a deal out there that will make us a better team there is no doubt we will seriously consider it."
